Cruise directors are the one responsible for a variety of entertainment onboard a cruise ship. They are required to have some previous experience from cruise ship entertainment department as cruise director assistants or cruise staff.
Cruise staff are entry-level positions open for extrovert, cheerful, and active people. They are expected to mix with the passengers, dance, sing, and assist with social games (such as bingo). Their salaries are fixed.
Casino staff must have at least three years experience in a major casino in at least two games. They have plenty of free time when the cruise ship is in the port because all the casinos are usually closed then.
Entertainers include vocalists, music bands, magicians, comedians, etc. Only highly professional performers get the contract to work on a cruise ship. A good portfolio must be presented to the entertainment director. Salaries and contract lengths vary. They might be as short as duration of a single cruise to several months. In some cases the entertainers get a free cruise as a reward for their performance.
Gentleman hosts are usually retired gentleman with good knowledge of social all dances. They are hired to socialise with female passengers, since on some cruise ships there is a great number of single, elderly female holidaymakers. Gentleman hosts must be able to dance several hours a day, every day a week. They usually do not get any salary, apart of a chance to cruise the world for free.
Cruise ship hosts and hostesses are the ones who greet the passengers as they board, do the announcements, assist in excursions, arrange parties, etc. they must be customer orientated with some public relations experience.
Youth counsellors are responsible for taking care of children of the passengers, keeping them busy and entertained. They are the babysitters on cruise ships. They must have some childcare experience. Contracts last usually only during the summer, making it a perfect chance of summer jobs for college students.
Other Entertainment and activity jobs include disk jockeys, dive instructors, lecturers, excursion staff, tour guides, etc.
